About “Talking with Barmaids”

Apparently, New Zealand’s famous scientist, (Lord) Ernest Rutherford, said that scientists should be able to explain their discoveries to a barmaid. This has always struck me as rather condescending.

What we will never know is what Lord Rutherford learned from talking WITH barmaids, rather than TO them. Maybe not physics, but I am sure it was useful knowledge.

Everyone is an expert. Make no assumptions. Ask more questions.

WARNING:   I am a (retired) science communicator. This blog rambles from the sublime to the ridiculous, but normally involves birds, travel, science, wonder and joy, in no apparent order or proportion.
